On Saturday, June 20, 1998, festivities took place in order to say goodbye to the U.S. Army soldiers and officers who had served at the Lech since 1945.
There were the official ceremony for invited guests in the Town Hall’s “Golden Hall” as well as the all day long open air festivities in Reese Barracks at Somme Street. Fireworks at night higlighted the events. So, 53 years of U.S. troops presence in Augsburg were terminated.
Hence, many personal connections and friendships as well as particular fates were going to find a new challenge and chance. It is important for Augsburg that the official statements - not only those of the past few years years but rather of decades - are actually followed up by a constructive and credible future.
It is the goal of Amerika in Augsburg e.V., to recall in an adequate way the historical part of the American presence in Augsburg and the associated commemoration.
